Legacy Theatre Team | Award Recognition

April 14th, 2023

O,R&L Construction Corporation is thrilled to share the following awards that were presented in recognition of the Legacy Theatre project in Stony Creek, CT:

2022 Connecticut Green Building Council (CTGBC) Green Building Retrofit Award of Merit

2022 AIA Connecticut Elizabeth Mills Brown Award of Excellence

2022 Preservation Connecticut Award of Merit

2022 AIA Connecticut Sustainable Architecture Award of Merit

From the very beginning of this exciting project, an integrated approach was employed to ensure that the design team; contractor; stakeholders, including Branford’s Clean Energy Ad Hoc Committee; and local citizens with an interest in sustainability;  worked together towards achieving project and energy goals. The building systems were designed to work in tandem with the existing structure and revised throughout the project as needed.

The renovation of this historic building represents a significant step towards sustainability by following the philosophy that the "greenest building is the one already built.” By extending the life of the materials at hand, the carbon impact is reduced and helps to minimize the construction industry's contribution to solid waste. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the exterior envelope, which is crucial in older buildings, the team focused on air leakage and inadequate insulation as the main sources of excessive energy consumption. In the original masonry building, continuous air barriers and insulation were added without thermal bridges on the interior. The roof was replaced with thermal-bridge-free continuous insulation.

Another critical decision was to make the entire building all-electric, eliminating the need for fossil fuels on-site. The sophisticated, efficient, electric air-to-air heat pump mechanical systems provide heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning. Fresh air is brought in constantly by an enthalpy recovery ventilator with MERV 13 filters, and an in-duct ultraviolet light and ionic plates help to maintain a healthy indoor environment. With these measures in place patrons can feel safe, even during times such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

We were proud to have been the Construction Manager for the Legacy Theatre project, along with the following team members that made this incredible project come to fruition: The Legacy Theatre (Owner), Wyeth Architects (Architect), Greg Wies & Gardner (Historic Architect), GNCB (Structural Engineers), CES (MEP), Criscuolo Engineering (Civil), and (Landscape Architect)
